Safety Around the Water is Just As Important Important As Safety In the Water

When it comes to pool safety, people consider swimming lessons as the end all be all. Yes, swimming lessons are an integral part of pool safety, but the fact is that is only one piece of the puzzle, albeit a big one. Safety around the water is just as important as safety in the water, and we’re sharing some valuable ways you can keep children safe while they are enjoying time around the pool and other areas of water.

Certified CPR Training and Knowledge

While lifeguards and certified swim instructors are required to know CPR, they aren’t the only ones who should learn this life-saving skill set. Especially since you’re not always at a public pool where lifeguards tend to stand guard.

Accidental drownings and falls around swimming pools can happen any place and time around water, including your personal pool in your backyard, and it’s imperative that you are prepared to handle any situation that may come your way. As an adult supervisor, it’s your responsibility to know CPR and standard pool safety guidelines to keep kids safe while under your supervision.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED and first aid classes are open to the public and offered at various locations throughout the area, including schools, your local Red Cross, fitness centers or through the Parks and Rec department. Course certification will only take a few hours out of your day and is available at an affordable price. The best way to find a class in your area is to search online, which will provide you with an array of options that will best fit your schedule.

By knowing and administering CPR immediately after an incident occurs until the EMTs or emergency personnel arrive, you could be making a huge difference in preventing an unintentional death by drowning.

Active Supervision

When it comes to a fun time in the water or outside near the pool, it’s important to remain vigilant and engaged. Put the cell phones away and the magazines down, especially if you’re the one in charge of watching the kids. We don’t realize how distracted we can become, whether it’s with our phone, our friends or something else. Make it a point to be engaged when you’re around any body of water when the kids are around. Don’t run inside for a “quick second” to grab anything or go to the bathroom. Accidents can happen in a split second, even to the most responsible people. By maintaining constant supervision, you will be within arm’s length from your child and can reach them immediately should something happen.

Enforce Safety Rules

When it comes to kids around water, there is no rule that’s too strict. If you’re in a public pool, be sure to go over the posted rules with your child. Help them to understand the rules are in place to protect them and create a safe swimming environment. The same goes with your own pool. Establish a solid set of rules that must be enforced while at home, as well, including no one goes into the pool without an adult present, and all doors and fences to the pool area must be closed and locked at all times. It should also be noted that any teenagers or adults who will be in charge of being the responsible supervisor in and/or around water must be CPR certified.

Make Water Safety Your Priority

It’s no secret that swimming lessons have proven time and again to be a vital part of water safety. Texas Swim Academy is dedicated to teaching children, beginning in infancy, the life-saving skills necessary to survive in the water. When a child is fully equipped to be a confident, capable swimmer, and the supervisors in charge are engaged, trained and focused, it will lead to years of fun in and around the water.

Give us a call today to learn more about the Texas Swim Academy difference and the many swimming programs we offer for children of all ages and abilities.

Why You Should Be Swimming

Besides being just plain fun, it’s well known that swimming is a great way to stay in shape. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities and is a total body workout. Swimming improves both strength and flexibility with little to no impact on joints. Because of the many health benefits of swimming, it should be a part of everyone’s fitness routine.

Swimming is Good for the Heart

All exercise is good for the heart, but swimming provides high intensity with low impact. That means all the benefits of jogging without the pounding on knees and ankles. Swimming can lower blood pressure, help with cholesterol, and increase your metabolism – all things that are great for heart health!

Swimming Reduces Stress

Swimming helps you relax in many ways. First of all, simply being in the water can help daily stresses float away. Swimming also helps muscles to relax and can ease tension in the body. Stiff necks and tight shoulders will loosen up from just a short time in the water. On top of that, many people find the rhythmic movement of swimming to be a meditative experience.

Swimming is Good for the Lungs

Swimming is a terrific aerobic exercise. It increases lung capacity while training your body to use oxygen more efficiently. Breathe easier by making swimming part of your fitness routine.

Swimming is Good for Pain Relief

Buoyancy in the water means less pressure on bones and joints and swimming improves flexibility and strengthens the muscles that support them. Being in the water also reduces pressure on the spine and can help with lower back pain. For low-impact fitness with a high impact on pain relief, swimming is a great choice.

Swimming Lessons in Katy

It’s never too late or too early to learn to swim and take advantage of the health benefits of swimming. At Texas Swim Academy, we offer an infant survival program, stroke development training, and adult swim lessons. Additionally, we offer physical education classes for homeschool students that run the whole school year and you can enroll your students at anytime.

We are also very proud to offer an incredible adaptive aquatics program. Our instructors are specially trained in autism swim instruction and provide a calm, patient, and reassuring atmosphere.

Right now is a great time to make swimming a part of your or your children’s fitness routine. Don’t keep putting off living a healthier lifestyle. We have a heated indoor pool for year-round comfort and swimming. Contact us today or call (832) 437-6186 to learn more.

The Top Benefits of Year-Round Swimming Lessons

Parents often think since swim season is typically during the summer months, swimming lessons should only coincide during that time. The reality is, swim lessons should take place year-round, as children can greatly benefit in a variety of ways.

Drowning Prevention

Our number one goal with swimming lessons is that children, at any age, know and understand the skills necessary to survive in the water should there ever be an emergent need for drowning prevention. Swimming is a skill people will use throughout their entire life, and it’s vital to start that education at a young age. Year-round swimming lessons are an important part of not only building, and maintaining, confidence in the water, but also the key to drowning prevention.

Skill Retention

The bottom line is the more opportunities a child has in the water, the more opportunities they have to work on their skillset. We’ve all heard the phrase, “Practice makes perfect,” and that couldn’t be more true with swimming. The more frequently you practice, the easier it is to not only retain those skills but also improve upon them. Continuing lessons throughout the year provide little swimmers with a regular routine, which helps deter the development of bad habits or fear of water as they grow.

Keep the Kids Engaged

Swimming is a great after school activity that gives kids a break from their busy school schedule. Giving your kids a chance to jump in the pool and escape the daily rigors of school and homework gives them something fun and freeing to look forward to. Successful swimming lessons are built upon a child enjoying their time in the water and giving them attainable goals that make them feel fulfilled when they are achieved. Group swimming lessons are a great way for kids to engage with new friends and socialize with people outside of their school setting.

Improve Overall Health

Year-round exercise and activity never hurt anyone, even children. Swimming has been shown to help reduce anxiety and depression, and giving your children a weekly break with time in the water allows them the ability to relax their body, immerse themselves in warm water temperatures and spend time focusing on their body through swimming’s use of repetitive motion and breathing patterns.

At Texas Swim Academy, we want your children to not only survive but thrive, in the water. Contact us today to learn more about all of the programs we offer and how we can help teach your children to swim year round.

Swimming with Puddle Jumpers and Arm Floaties Actually Put Children More at Risk

As a survival swim school, we understand our responsibility to provide children in the community and surrounding areas with not only the life-saving skills necessary to survive in the water, but also provide them with a deep love and appreciation for the water. When parents encourage and promote the use of puddle jumpers and arm floaties, they are doing a grave disservice to their children, ultimately putting them more at risk for drowning.

It’s important to us to provide valuable information about the dangers of these devices and how they can negatively affect a child’s experience in the water.

Puddle Jumpers Create a False Sense of Security

Puddle jumpers and arm floaties provide both children and parents alike with a false sense of security. When outfitting a child with either of these floatation devices, parents mistakenly believe their child is safe from drowning and can become lax in vigilantly watching their child while they are in the water. Children, on the other hand, all of a sudden think they can truly swim or stay afloat in the water at all times while wearing them.

Herein lies the problem.

Children who spend most of their time swimming in the pool with puddle jumpers or floaties believe they are swimming unassisted, since no one is holding them. So they come to develop the belief that they can stay above water without the help of these floatation devices.

There have been way too many documented horror stories from parents who have shared their own experiences with their child going back into the water unattended and alone because they thought they could swim thanks to the hands-off approach of puddle jumpers and arm floaties.

Incorrect and Ineffective Posture

Puddle jumpers and arm floaties are notorious for helping children develop ineffective swimming posture. These devices hold children in a vertical position — head up, feet down, arms out — causing them to use more of a bicycling motion in the water. What many don’t understand is the vertical position is the drowning position.

Being able to maintain your own buoyancy, the ability to float on your back, is the number one rule when an issue arises in the water. It’s imperative a child knows how to successfully get to and hold this position should they fall into the water unexpectedly.

There is No Alternative to Knowing How to Swim

Respecting the water and fearing the water are two very different things. Teaching our children from a young age, even infants, the proper skills necessary, as well as them understanding their limitations, not only creates strong swimmers, but respectful ones, as well. Enrolling your child in swimming lessons provides them with confidence, a life-saving skill set, and a lifelong love of water.

Relying on the use of puddle jumpers and arm floaties is not a replacement for swimming lessons, and using them as such only hinders a child’s growth and development in and around the water.

Child drownings don’t discriminate. They can affect any one of us at any time. Providing our children with the proper skill set by trained professionals beginning at a young age will give them the tools necessary to survive, and thrive, in the water.

Benefits of Summer Swim Leagues

There are many great reasons to join a summer swim league in Katy and the Houston area. At Texas Swim Academy, we offer seven different levels of stroke development classes so we see the positive impact it has on children of all ages and skill levels.

Life Skill

Swim team is a fun and healthy way for your child to learn a very valuable life skill. Being a strong swimmer is something that will benefit them for their entire life, both for fun and safety. Working on stroke development will teach proper swimming mechanics, proper breathing technique, and they’ll race in competitive length pools, building both endurance and strength.

Friendship

Being part of a team builds strong bonds between people. They cheer on their teammates as they compete, work toward common goals, and overcome challenges by supporting each other. Summer swim league is a great way for your kids to make new friends over the break and also strengthen relationships with existing ones.

Teamwork

Being able to effectively work as part of a team is an invaluable life skill that goes far beyond the swimming pool. Fostering good teamwork skills will benefit your child all the way from school projects to success in their adult careers. By joining a summer swim league, your child will learn important life lessons on how to win (and lose) as a team, how to contribute when others are counting on them, and how to be supportive of other’s success and encouraging when things don’t go right.

Fitness

In the world of videogames and handheld devices, many kids aren’t as active as they should be. Plus, in the Houston area in the middle of summer, it’s often just too hot to stay outside all day. Weekly swim team practices and stroke development classes at Texas Swim Academy will give your child an outlet to release energy while improving their cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. Swimming also improves flexibility, is easy on the joints, and is a whole body exercise your child can continue for their entire life.

Community

Often, parents are just as involved in summer swim leagues as the kids. It’s always important to know your neighbors and building a strong sense of community is good for everyone. Also, it’s nice to get to know the parents of the kids your child spends time with. Summer swim meets will be a great opportunity for both parents and kids to get to know each other.

Texas Swim Academy teaches all kids of all ages and abilities how to be better swimmers, but we also have special stroke development classes for those who want to perform better on a competitive swim team. Call us today at (832) 437-6186 or just stop by our state-of-the-art facility at 3514 Greenbusch Road in Katy to learn more!

Experience the Difference at Texas Swim Academy

Texas Swim Academy opened in Bruce and Kathleen McMordie’s backyard pool in 2004 with one dream in mind — to share their passion of water safety by providing area children with reputable swimming lessons. Since then, Texas Swim Academy has grown into the leading swim academy in Houston at a state-of-the-art facility with well-equipped instructors who teach children of any age not only how to survive in the water, but thrive, as well.

At Texas Swim Academy, we believe that swimming is more than just a fun hobby or sport, it’s a life skill that can save lives. And when you become a part of the Texas Swim Academy family, you’ll personally experience the difference that sets us apart.

Our Facility

We’ve grown from the humble beginnings of providing swimming lessons in a backyard pool into our beautiful state-of-the-art indoor facility. Texas Swim Academy is home to five 12 x 12 pools designed to accommodate private, one-on-one infant survival skills, as well as a large 30 x 60 pool for stroke development, group lessons and the pre-competition Texas Tritons Swim Club. Our pools always maintain a heated temperature of 88 to 90 degrees so students can remain comfortable during their time in the water.

“It was very important to us to recreate that relaxed backyard experience for our students,” Kathleen says. “The smaller pools and one-on-one instruction fosters an environment where the child feels secure and safe.”

Programs for All Ages

Drowning is an awful, yet preventable, tragedy that can happen to anyone at any age. It is our mission to empower children, starting at the infant age, with the survival skills necessary to be able to protect themselves if they are ever in life-threatening situations in the water. All of our lessons are conducted using a gentle approach, teaching young children in a loving, nurturing environment that allows them to be comfortable and relaxed while learning life-saving skills.

Whether your child is a part of our survival swim lessons or our adaptive aquatics with a focus on children on the autism spectrum or working on their stroke development, we focus on their individual development in a child-sensored atmosphere. We believe that everyone, no matter their age or ability, should be able to enjoy the fun, healthy and life-saving benefits of knowing how to swim. We build relationships with the children, understanding each of their unique needs and ways of learning in order for them to have the best possible experience.

Our Commitment to You

From infant survival skills to providing the skills necessary to become highly decorated competitive swimmers, Texas Swim Academy is Houston’s premier swim academy. Our passion for helping children succeed is what drives us on a daily basis, and there’s nothing more enjoyable than seeing the infants we teach turn into thriving young children in the water as they grow older.

“Our goal at Texas Swim Academy is for every child to have the opportunity for true aquatic success,” Kathleen adds. “We want children to not only be safer in and around the water, but to also develop a lifelong love of swimming.”

Texas Swim Academy is Katy’s home for swimming, and we look forward to passing along our knowledge and expertise to create lifelong swimmers for generations to come.
