Safety Around the Water Is Just as Important as Safety in the Water

When it comes to pool safety, people consider swimming lessons as the end all be all. Yes, swimming lessons are an integral part of pool safety, but the fact is that is only one piece of the puzzle, albeit a big one. Safety around the water is just as important as safety in the water, and we’re sharing some valuable ways you can keep children safe while they are enjoying time around the pool and other areas of water.

Certified CPR Training and Knowledge

While lifeguards and certified swim instructors are required to know CPR, they aren’t the only ones who should learn this life-saving skill set. Especially since you’re not always at a public pool where lifeguards tend to stand guard.

Accidental drownings and falls around swimming pools can happen any place and time around water, including your personal pool in your backyard, and it’s imperative that you are prepared to handle any situation that may come your way. As an adult supervisor, it’s your responsibility to know CPR and standard pool safety guidelines to keep kids safe while under your supervision.

CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED and first aid classes are open to the public and offered at various locations throughout the area, including schools, your local Red Cross, fitness centers or through the Parks and Rec department. Course certification will only take a few hours out of your day and is available at an affordable price. The best way to find a class in your area is to search online, which will provide you with an array of options that will best fit your schedule.

By knowing and administering CPR immediately after an incident occurs until the EMTs or emergency personnel arrive, you could be making a huge difference in preventing an unintentional death by drowning.

Active Supervision

When it comes to a fun time in the water or outside near the pool, it’s important to remain vigilant and engaged. Put the cell phones away and the magazines down, especially if you’re the one in charge of watching the kids. We don’t realize how distracted we can become, whether it’s with our phone, our friends or something else. Make it a point to be engaged when you’re around any body of water when the kids are around. Don’t run inside for a “quick second” to grab anything or go to the bathroom. Accidents can happen in a split second, even to the most responsible people. By maintaining constant supervision, you will be within arm’s length from your child and can reach them immediately should something happen.

Enforce Safety Rules

When it comes to kids around water, there is no rule that’s too strict. If you’re in a public pool, be sure to go over the posted rules with your child. Help them to understand the rules are in place to protect them and create a safe swimming environment. The same goes with your own pool. Establish a solid set of rules that must be enforced while at home, as well, including no one goes into the pool without an adult present, and all doors and fences to the pool area must be closed and locked at all times. It should also be noted that any teenagers or adults who will be in charge of being the responsible supervisor in and/or around water must be CPR certified.
